A braced frame column splice is positioned four feet above the top of the concrete slab. The connection utilizes complete joint penetration groove welds on the flanges and webs, with tapered flange transitions provided in accordance with AWS D1.8 clause 4.2. Steel weld backing need not be removed, but weld tabs must be removed per AWS D1.8 clause 6.16.
