A horizontal expansion or control joint is formed within the exterior brick masonry veneer using an elastomeric sealant bead backed by a compressible rod. The veneer is supported continuously by a steel shelf angle anchored back to the structural stud framing. Rigid insulation and an air barrier membrane are installed continuously behind the masonry cavity to maintain thermal and moisture performance. Fasteners secure the steel backup studs and support assemblies together through the cavity space.
