A structural steel beam bears on a cap plate welded to the top of a hollow structural section column. Two L6x4x5/16-inch structural angles connect the beam to the column with typical one-quarter-inch fillet welds. A three-quarter-inch-diameter through-bolt passes through long-slotted holes positioned in the angles, allowing vertical movement. The bolt is set at the bottom of the long-slotted hole to accommodate anticipated differential deflection or thermal movement.
