A concrete slab features a thickened section to accommodate a utility pipe or conduit running beneath it. The slab is reinforced with either 4x4 W1.4xW1.4 welded wire fabric or number 4 reinforcing bars spaced at twelve inches on center. The thickened trench extends a minimum of six inches below the typical slab thickness with tapered side slopes. The assembly bears on firm undisturbed soil or compacted fill.
