A wide-flange steel beam carries three-eighths-inch thick stiffener plates welded to its web and flanges on three sides with one-quarter-inch fillet welds. The plates extend as required for incoming connections and maintain a typical one-quarter-inch clearance from the beam centerline. Stiffener plates are installed typically unless noted or detailed otherwise on structural plans.
