A structural steel column splice connects an upper column to a larger lower column with milled column ends bearing against each other. The upper column aligns centrally over the transition, with fillet welds or groove welds specified per detail A or B. A minimum one-quarter-inch clearance gap is maintained at the joint, with typical dimensions of three feet six inches and four feet six inches indicated for the splice plates unless noted otherwise.
