A structural steel wide-flange column is capped with a steel plate welded to the column flanges and web. The cap plate thickness is specified as one-half inch at W10 or W8 columns, and seven-eighths inch at W14 or W12 columns unless otherwise noted. A three-eighths inch fillet weld is specified typically at the flange. A web stiffener plate sized to half the web thickness is welded typically at the web. A shear tab connection is provided where required to support framing members.
