A structural steel column bears on a base plate anchored to a concrete foundation by anchor rods. Non-shrink grout fills the gap beneath the base plate up to the top of concrete elevation shown on plans. The base plate finishing requirements vary by plate thickness: plates two inches or less are finished as rolled, plates between two and four inches are pressed or milled, and plates greater than four inches are milled. A finished column end surface rests directly on the base plate.
