A wide-flange beam connects to a hollow structural section column using a three-eighths-inch through-plate, with bolt sizes and plate lengths sized per schedule. The through-plate passes through a slot in the hollow structural section column, which is detailed one-sixteenth-inch wider than the plate. The plate is trimmed at one-sided connections, maintaining a half-inch clearance to the end of the plate. At the top of the hollow structural section column, a quarter-inch cap plate is provided with a seal weld all around. The connection uses typical quarter-inch fillet welds and standard edge distances, with through-plate shapes provided at the contractor's option.
