A steel beam connects to a hollow structural section column utilizing a three-eighths-inch stiffener plate and a one-half-inch steel plate. Two three-quarter-inch diameter machine bolts secure the assembly, specifying high-strength ASTM A325 bolts when a tiedown connects to the steel beam. Three-sixteenth-inch fillet welds attach the plates to the members. When the column occurs in a stud wall, wood nailers are provided on each side using five-eighths-inch diameter bolts spaced at twenty-four inches on center.
