Standard configurations for reinforced circular and rectangular web penetrations in wide flange steel beams. The circular penetration detail has a diameter up to one-third of the beam depth, reinforced with a square plate whose thickness matches the web thickness with a three-eighths inch minimum, joined with five-sixteenths inch fillet welds and an optional field weld. Section A-A details the placement of the reinforcing plates on each side of the web, extending past the penetration by the dimension K plus one-half inch minimum. The rectangular penetration detail accommodates openings up to beam depth divided by three in height and beam height maximum in length, utilizing four plates total matched to the wide flange beam grade. These plates extend beyond the opening by twice the width dimension on each side and are secured with fillet welds sized to half the flange thickness.
