About this detail

A steel beam frames into a hollow structural section column with a welded shear plate and continuity stiffener plates. The steel beam features a top or roof concrete fill over a metal floor deck, maintaining a one-inch minimum depth below the top of the floor or roof level. The shear plate connects to the beam web using three seven-eighths-inch diameter erection bolts, reduced to two bolts for W8 or W10 shapes, with a plate thickness equal to the beam web thickness plus one-eighth inch. Continuity stiffener plates of 50 ksi steel are welded to each side of the column web, with a thickness matching the greater beam flange thickness plus one-eighth inch. The assembly is welded using complete-joint-penetration welds from the beam flanges to the stiffener plates, five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds from the stiffener plates to the column web, and five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds along three sides of the shear plate to the beam web. Standard weld access holes are provided at the beam web-to-flange intersections.
