A hollow structural section stair stringer is supported by an HSS 4x4x1/4 steel post. A three-eighths-inch thick stiffener plate is welded inside the stringer web directly over the support. A one-quarter-inch bearing plate is welded to the bottom of the stringer with a three-sixteenths-inch fillet weld and secured to the post with two three-quarter-inch diameter machine bolts.
