A wide-flange beam frames into an HSS column below a slab, tied together with a three-bolt connection at the web and a top cap plate welded to the column. A diagonal hollow structural section brace connects to a half-inch thick ASTM A572 Grade 50 gusset plate, welded to both the column and the underside of the beam flange with five-sixteenths fillet welds. The gusset plate features fifteen-sixteenths inch maximum diameter holes at the contractor's option for erection. The assembly transfers lateral loads from the brace into the primary structural frame.
