The existing steel member surfaces are ground smooth and square prior to field welding. Flange bevels for column splices are turned outward as detailed. Web thicknesses greater than three-eighths inch and less than three-eighths inch require specific weld preparation and joint profiles. Full penetration welds join the structural steel sections.
