A moment connection joins a hollow structural section beam to a hollow structural section column. The assembly features an intermediate hollow structural section piece matching the column size, flanked horizontally by A572 Grade 50 plates whose thickness matches the hollow structural section beam wall. Complete joint penetration welds with top and bottom backing bars secure the beam flanges to the column assembly. A partial joint penetration weld joins the beam web to the column. The plate corners may be trimmed flush with the column where no beam frames into it.
