A structural steel beam connects to a wide-flange or hollow structural section column with a top bearing plate and bolted side splice plates. A 3/4-inch plate sits atop the column, secured by four 3/4-inch diameter machine bolts for wide-flange columns. A 1/2-inch by 12-inch splice plate is centered on the beam web on each side, utilizing A325-N high-strength bolts in horizontal short-slotted holes sized according to the schedule. Fillet welds of 1/4-inch and 5/16-inch sizes are specified at the plate connections on near side and far side as indicated. A maximum 1/2-inch gap is maintained at the joint, with beam sizes such as W30x and W36x matched to specific bolting quantities.
