This structural detail shows a moment connection joining a steel beam to a column flange at a grid line. Horizontal continuity plates match the column flange width and have thicknesses determined by the beam flange thickness plus one-quarter inch. Complete joint penetration welds connect the beam flanges to the continuity plates, with top and bottom flange plates left unwelded in the corners. A welded shear tab with two bolts connects the beam web to the column flange, utilizing fillet welds sized to half the web thickness. Four-inch weld returns are specified typically on the top and bottom of the connection.
