A structural steel wide-flange column is topped with a cap plate welded to the column flanges and web. The cap plate thickness is specified as one-half inch at W10 or W8 columns, and seven-eighths inch at W14 or W12 columns unless noted otherwise. A three-eighths-inch fillet weld is typical at the flange connection, while a fillet weld sized at half the web thickness is typical at the web stiffener plate. A shear tab is provided where indicated for beam framing connections.
