A structural transition and complete joint penetration weld connects two column flanges of differing thicknesses or widths. The upper column flange requires a chamfer before welding to the lower column flange below, maintaining a maximum slope transition of two and one half to one. A complete joint penetration weld with a double-bevel groove configuration joins the two members together.
