A wide flange beam connects to a hollow structural section or wide flange column using a top cap plate and a bolted shear tab. The cap plate thickness varies based on column size, specifying a three-eighths inch plate for hollow structural sections six by six or smaller and a half-inch plate for sections seven by seven or larger. For wide flange columns, the cap plate is a half-inch thick for W10 or W8 shapes and seven-eighths inch thick for W14 or W12 shapes unless noted otherwise. A shear tab is welded to the column centerline where required to receive the beam web with structural bolts.
