An existing hollow structural section column is cut and shored during construction to install a new wide-flange column below. A half-inch thick cap plate matching the column width and depth is welded to the top of the wide-flange column with a quarter-inch fillet weld on three sides and on each side of the web. The centerlines of both the hollow structural section column and the wide-flange column align vertically.
