Continuity plate thickness matches or exceeds the thickness of the thicker beam flange. The plate is welded to the column web or web doubler plate using a double-sided fillet weld sized at half the plate thickness. A one-quarter inch fillet weld is held back from the column flange-to-web fillet with a minimum one-half inch radius. Where the beam occurs at a free side, the continuity plate is connected to the column flange with a complete joint penetration weld. Weld tabs are prohibited near the column flange-to-web fillet unless approved by the engineer of record, though they are permitted near the column flange tip provided they are removed upon completion.
