A typical braced frame column splice connection is located four feet above the top of the concrete slab unless noted otherwise. The connection utilizes complete joint penetration double-bevel groove welds at the column flanges with tapered flange transitions provided per AWS D1.8 Clause 4.2. Steel weld backing is permitted to remain in place, while weld tabs must be removed in accordance with AWS D1.8 Clause 6.16.
