A rectangular penetration is cut through the web of a structural steel beam within the center one-third of the span, detailed for a non-frame beam. One-half-inch reinforcing plates are welded to both sides of the web around the opening, extending one foot beyond the penetration length on each side. The corners of the rectangular cut feature a two-inch radius to reduce stress concentrations. Section A-A indicates the weld size along the reinforcement plates as equal to half the flange thickness.
