A structural steel beam connects to a hollow structural section column using a one-half inch top column plate welded with one-quarter inch fillet welds to the beam flange. The beam flange width is less than five and one-half inches. The top column plate width is specified to be the greater of the beam flange width or the hollow structural section width plus three inches.
