An expansion joint assembly at a bridge abutment backwall includes a one-half-inch expansion joint filler and expanded polystyrene positioned vertically against the face of the backwall, extending one foot zero inches above the construction joint. A bearing pad is centered beneath the abutment deck relative to the centerline of the bearing abutment. Dimensioning references the face of the backwall and spans a distance of dimension "a" plus one-half inch to detail B6-21.
