A wide flange column is capped with a plate whose thickness matches the flange thickness, with a one-half inch minimum plate thickness typical. Wide flange beams frame into the column on one or both sides using a bolted shear tab welded to the column flange. The cap plate is welded on three sides typically. Two-sided connections are provided where wide flange beams occur on opposite sides of the column.
