An HSS beam connects to a carrying hollow structural section member using a shear plate welded to the carrying member with five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds on both sides. The supported HSS beam is secured to the shear plate with an erection bolt. A quarter-inch fillet weld is applied typically on three sides of the shear plate. A maximum half-inch clearance is maintained between the framing members, and spacing requirements restrict the carrying member wall thickness to three times its base dimension.
