A hollow structural section beam bears onto a three-eighths-inch thick plate welded between the flanges of a wide flange beam. Side plates connect the structural members using one-quarter-inch fillet welds applied to three sides typically. Additional one-quarter-inch fillet welds secure the plates to the beam and side plates.
