A column splice transitions from a smaller column section to a larger column section. A transition cap plate is provided at the top of the lower column, measuring 1-1/2 inches thick for W8 or W10 columns, and 2 inches thick for W12 or larger columns. The assembly includes 1/2 inch by 16 inch stiffener plates on the near side and far side. Welds connect the components with 3/8 inch fillet welds typically at the flange and 7/16 inch fillet welds typically at the web for perpendicular web configurations. The detail provides options for both web perpendicular and web parallel orientations, with hollow structural section to wide flange column applications being similar.
