A wide-flange beam sits atop a structural steel tube column, bearing on a 1-inch thick cap plate that overhangs the column sides by 1/2 inch typically. The cap plate is secured with four 3/4-inch diameter A325-N bolts. Three-eighths-inch full-height stiffeners matching the flange width are centered on the column on each side and welded with 1/4-inch and 3/16-inch fillet welds. The beam size and column size are sized per plan.
