Preparation and reinforcement of weld access holes in structural steel beam-to-column moment connections. The backing bar is removed, and the area is ground smooth before applying a reinforcing fillet weld over the beam flange cut. The fillet weld sizing is specified as a one-quarter-inch minimum at the top flange, and between five-sixteenths-inch minimum and three-eighths-inch maximum at the bottom flange, based on the beam flange thickness. Clearances and dimensions are designated relative to the beam web thickness and flange geometry around the weld access holes.
