An inline structural steel splice connects aligned hollow structural section members with an inserted cap plate. The cap plate thickness is specified as three-eighths inch for hollow structural sections measuring six by six inches or smaller, and one-half inch for sections measuring seven by seven inches or larger, unless noted otherwise. Fillet welds join the members to the cap plate.
