Code-compliant hole drilling and notching limits for wood framing members include double top plates and sill plates. Notches are restricted to a maximum depth of D/2 at specific locations, requiring eight 16d nails on each side of the notch and a 10-gauge steel strap when notch depths exceed 1 inch. Drilled holes are limited to a maximum diameter of D/3, positioned within the middle third of the member depth with minimum edge distances. Shear wall top plates are left unnotched unless specifically detailed, and individual notches are spaced with maximum frequency limits.
