A wide flange steel beam connects to a wide flange steel column flange using complete joint penetration groove welds at the beam flanges and fillet welds at the web. ASTM A572 Grade 50 cap plates and continuity plates match the thickness of the thickest welded beam flange plus one-eighth inch and match the width of the column. Weld access holes are provided at the top and bottom of the beam. Where no backspan occurs, a five-sixteenth inch complete joint penetration weld is specified at the web.
