Steel bar joists bear on top of a supporting structural steel girder with a standard one-quarter-inch gap between joist ends. A three-eighths-inch by three-inch by zero-foot-nine-inch long splice plate spans the top chords, welded with three-sixteenths-inch welds at four-inch intervals. Additional welding at the joist seats follows Steel Joist Institute specifications. A wood nailer and sheathing sit above the joist top chord. A welded girder brace provides lateral stability as required by the manufacturer.
