A wide-flange beam is enclosed into a box shape by adding plates to the flange tips, sized per plan. The reinforcing plates are welded to the beam with five-sixteenths inch intermittent welds spaced at six-to-twelve inches, with one-foot-six-inch long continuous welds at the ends typical. A maximum clearance of three-quarters of an inch is maintained at the plate termination. Boxed beam reinforcing plates must terminate six inches clear from the support beam.
