A circular penetration through a steel beam web is reinforced with a Schedule 40 pipe sleeve having a length equal to the beam flange width. The sleeve is centered on the opening and welded to each side of the web with a quarter-inch fillet weld. The opening is located within a maximum distance of one-sixth of the span from the centerline of the span. Placement limits require the opening to be positioned between one-quarter and one-fifth of the beam depth from the flanges. Reinforcing is omitted when the round opening diameter is equal to or less than one-third of the beam depth plus one inch.
NOTES: 1. Where round opening is D/3 + 1" or less, the reinforcing pipe shown is not required. CENTERLINE OF SPAN L (L/2) SCHEDULE 40 PIPE SLEEVE, LENGTH = BEAM FLANGE WIDTH D/4 MIN. D/5 MAX. D/4 MIN. L/6 MAX. D 1/4 EACH SIDE OF WEB
