A hollow structural section column terminates with a welded cap plate measuring three-eighths of an inch thick for sections six by six or smaller, and one-half inch thick for sections seven by seven or larger. A continuous or typical weld connects the cap plate to the column profile. A vertical shear tab is centered inside or along the column web for beam attachment where it occurs.
