This detail outlines the supplemental reinforcing steel required around openings in concrete walls. Each corner of the opening receives one number 5 bar at 4 feet long, with two number 5 bars required for walls 10 inches thick or greater. Reinforcement around the opening must equal one-half the amount of the interrupted normal reinforcement in the direction parallel to that edge. The minimum reinforcement is one number 5 bar, increasing to two number 5 bars for walls 10 inches thick or greater. Vertical reinforcement must extend the full height of the story, and diagonal corner bars are placed at a typical 2-foot extension from the opening corners.
