An interior slab-on-grade construction joint occurs between a first pour and a second pour. Reinforcement continues across the construction joint because the slab functions as a structural diaphragm, meaning the fresh side of the joint must not be through-cut or trench saw-cut. A thirty-two inch lap splice is provided for the reinforcing steel, with two inches of clearance typically maintained. The interface requires the concrete to be cleaned, free of laitance, and intentionally roughened to a quarter-inch profile. The contractor must submit a slab-on-grade pour plan for engineer review prior to pouring, keeping the maximum pour dimension to two hundred feet with a two-to-one maximum aspect ratio.
