This structural steel detail establishes geometric parameters for beam web access holes, commonly referred to as rat holes or cope holes, used in welded moment connections. The assembly features a drilled 3/4-inch diameter hole serving as the radius termination point, with adjacent bevel cuts configured to AWS 1.1 requirements. Dimensional notes specify the access hole length as three times the flange thickness (plus or minus 1/2 inch) and height ranging from three-quarters of the flange thickness to the full flange thickness (plus or minus 1/4 inch, with a 3/4-inch minimum). The bevel angle is restricted to a maximum of 25 degrees. Cutting methods and surface smoothness requirements are directed to project specifications.
