A notch cut into the bottom flange and web of a structural steel wide-flange beam accommodates mechanical penetrations coordinated with mechanical drawings. The notched corner requires a typical radius to prevent stress concentration. Reinforcing plates are specified on each side of the web, measuring 1 inch by 8 inches for W30x beams and 3/4 inch by 8 inches for W27x beams. The dimension from the top of the beam to the bottom of the notch is two feet zero inches minimum, with variable clearances noted below. Fillet welds are indicated along the reinforcing plate connections.
