A bolted steel column splice connection is located above the floor framing reference line. The upper and lower steel columns are joined using flange splice plates with a minimum three-eighths inch thickness, secured by eight bolts typically on each flange. A web splice plate with a minimum five-sixteenths inch thickness is installed on the near side only unless noted otherwise, fastened with eight bolts. Fillers or shims are provided as required between the column flanges to accommodate dimensional variances.
