An HSS post bears onto a steel base plate of thickness tPL, secured with two 3/4-inch-diameter ASTM F1554 Grade 36 anchor rods with heavy hex nuts or rod heads embedded in concrete. A 3/16-inch fillet weld connects the HSS post to the base plate along the long sides, leaving the short sides unwelded. A finished bearing surface is provided at the column end and plate top. The assembly rests on a minimum 1-inch thick layer of nonshrink grout over the footing, with anchor rods having a minimum 1 1/2-inch projection and a minimum 3-inch clearance from the bottom of footing.
