A wide-flange beam with a reduced beam section connects to a wide-flange column using complete joint penetration welds at the beam flanges and web. Continuity plates matching the beam flange thickness are welded inside the column flanges with complete joint penetration welds. A three-eighths by five inch plate serves as an erection tab bolted to the top of the beam flange and column. A designated no-penetration zone is marked on the beam web near the reduced beam section, and weld access holes are detailed per AISC specification J1.6.
