A hollow structural section connects to an existing concrete buttress via four one-inch diameter A193 B7 threaded rods anchored through core holes in the concrete. The rods terminate at a three-eighths-inch welded end plate on the HSS member, secured with nuts, washers, and one-inch by five-inch round washers bearing against a plate washer in recessed core pockets filled with grout after inspection. Top and bottom plates measuring three-quarters of an inch by nine inches by nine inches weld to the assembly, augmented by welded two-inch by two-inch bevel plate washers with one-and-one-eighth-inch diameter holes. Fillet welds of five-sixteenths and seven-sixteenths inch sizes secure the steel plate connections in conjunction with the structural members bearing over the existing roof plywood.
