New openings in existing concrete or masonry require core drilling six-inch diameter holes in each corner prior to sawcutting to prevent overcutting and reduce stress concentrations. Corners are chipped out as required to achieve a clean square opening. Nondestructive testing must locate existing reinforcing bars prior to cutting, and openings are positioned to avoid contact with existing reinforcement. All opening locations must be reviewed and approved by the structural engineer of record prior to coring.

PROVIDE NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING TO DETERMINE THE LOCATION OF (E) REINFORCING BARS PRIOR TO THE CUTTING OF (N) HOLES. LOCATE THE (N) OPENING IN SUCH A MATTER TO AVOID CONTACT WITH (E) REINFORCING.
