A wide flange beam connects to a hollow structural section column using complete joint penetration groove welds at the top and bottom flanges. Fifty ksi cap plates and continuity plates match the thickness of the thickest welded beam flange plus one-eighth inch and match the greater width of the column or welded beam flange. Weld access holes are detailed per American Institute of Steel Construction three-sixty standards at top and bottom. A structural tee section frames the beam web using two seven-eighths inch diameter erection bolts, with three bolts required for W-eighteen sections or greater. The stem of the structural tee measures beam web thickness plus one-eighth inch, and the structural tee flange is four inches wide minimum.
